47-YEAR-OLD CHINESE WOMAN SENT TO KIRIKIRI FOR SETTING HOTEL ON FIRE

The one-count charge of arson was interpreted in Mandarin to Zhen who does not understand English Language by an interpreter, Mr Kennedy Kenneth.

After the charge was read and she was to respond with her plea,  the Chinese national said “I cannot say yes or no to the charge”.

It was gathered that Zhen upon arrival in Nigeria  had lodged in Ernest Place Hotel located at Allen Avenue with her lover also of Chinese decent.

The two lovers were said to have quickly warmed themselves into the hearts of hotel staff but the relationship turned sour after they got into a major fight.

Zhen during one of their arguments allegedly set their room on fire.

According to the prosecution led by Mr Tiwaloju Aderoju, Zhen committed the offence on July 5, 2015 at Ernest Place, a hotel located at No. 28, Bamishile St., Allen Avenue,  Lagos.

“The defendant willfully set fire to the building of Mr Ernest Uwaneyem and destroyed part of the building,” Aderoju alleged.

According to the prosecution, the offence violated Section 341 of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2011.

Section 341 of the law prescribes a seven-year sentence for anyone done guilty of causing arson.

Justice Hakeem Oshodi adjourned the case to March 28 for trial.
