Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday commissioned special and sexual offences court to fight the delay in the determination of corruption, financial Crime and sexual offences in Lagos.
The court is first of its kind in the nation.
According to the Chief Justice of Lagos, Justice Opeyemi Oke, the Lagos State Judiciary has taken the bull by the horn by designating four courts ad special offences courts to hear only corruption and financial crime cases.
“We believe strongly that the special courts shall fast track the trial of these types of cases and encourage the EFCC and other relevant bodies like QCPC to expedite the investigation and prosecution of such cases.
“Presently, there are over 500 cases of financial Crime pending before the high court, the bulk of which have now been assigned to special offences courts.
“We are enthusiastic about the designation of the new courts as we see the development as a step in the right direction.
We must be relentless in our determination to see an end to this societal malaise,” Justice Oke said.
Present at the event, is the wife of the Vice-president of Nigeria, Mrs Dolapo Osibajo, governor of Lagos State represented by the deputy, Mrs Idiat Oluranti Adebule, wife of Lagos State governor Mrs Bolanle Ambode, The Attorney General and commissioner for Justice, Lagos State , Mr. Kazeem Adeniji.
