Tear Flows As Nigerians  Mourn Victims of Violent Killings Across The Country  

It was an emotional moment when Nigerians from all walks of life gathered on Tuesday in Abuja to mourn and honour all the victims of violent killings across the country with a procession tagged ” National Day of Mourning ” 
Clad in black Tee- shirts with inscriptions ‘ Not Just Number Nigeria Mourns ; End The Killings , the protesters March in a peaceful rally against indecent killings in Nigeria
Members of civil society groups, human rights activists and family members of the victims were in attendance to remember those who have lost their lives in extra- judicial killings, herdsmen, kidnappers and armed robbery attacks.
The convener of the procession Jaiye Gaskiya said that the National Day of Mourning and Remembrance is a citizens led initiative to express solidarity, and demand accountability for the security and welfare of all Nigerians. 
He stated that killings have risen drastically in recent times, as Nigerians wake up daily to fresh news of mass atrocities, which have become a norm in the country.
Jaiye Gaskiya said that Nigerians are dying on daily basis but no name can be placed on those who have lost their lives . He noted that the procession is to rekindle the hope of the families of the victims that they are not alone . According to Jaiye: ” We are always saying people are dying .Whenever you read newspapers you will see 27 people were killed in a community.. These 27 people  are human being and they  have names,  they have families  ”  
” Our people that we lost everyday  are not mere number , they are the people that we know . They are the people who are our neighbours , people who are our colleagues and compatriots.” 
Gaskiya noted that the only honour Nigerians can give to those that have died in such circumstance was to count ,  name  and recognise that they come from a home. 
” We want those who have lost people to violent attacks to know that they are not alone , that the nation is with them ” 
As part of the activities to honour the departed Nigerians wreaths were laid and one minute silent was observed in their remembrance.
The protest which began from  the unity fountain was taken to the Ministry of Justice where a roll call of 323 victims of various violent killings in the country. were read.
Also a list of the victims  of various killings was read by the former Chairman of National Human Rights Commission , Chidi Odinkalu at the Ministry of Justice. 
The list which includes  ;  the mass killing in Zamfara  , killings in Numan Adamawa , herdsmen massacre at Nkiedonwro in Plateau, victims of electoral violence. Other are ; Shiites  massacre in Zaria and herdsmen killing in Benue among other.  Some of the group includes  ; Global Right , Amnesty International, YIAGA AFRICA, , Enough Is Enough Nigeria , Concerned Nigerians , Center for Democracy and Development,  BudgIT,  BringBackOurGirls , Nigerian Intervention Movement among others  .
